Find the right IT position with a laptop and some perseveranceInformation technology was once the fastest growing sector in the UK job market but things have changed a lot in the last couple of years owing to the financial crises that most countries have been going through. Despite this there are still some excellent opportunities to make good money if you know where to look and are willing to put some effort into your search. There is no need to stay at home job hunting as you can pop down to your local café with a netbook and check out the latest openings in a more pleasant environment. As they all come equipped with a wireless card and many cafés have WiFi networks there is plenty of choice when it comes to where to conduct your search. Programming for these small machines could be the niche you are looking for as being able to write applications that have a small memory footprint is a valuable skill when developing software for these budget computers. They have a fairly small screen but with an LCD TV that has a high enough screen resolution it is possible to connect your PC to a readymade large monitor without having to go to the expense of buying one just for this purpose. Apart from checking online advertisements it can still be worth looking through your local paper as sometimes you will stumble across a hidden gem that many others will not have found. The wider you cast your net the better your chances of success. Learning new skillsWhen people look at a high definition TV they usually see a desirable piece of home entertainment equipment and nothing more. For a software developer these sets that have revolutionised many people's viewing habits with their crisper image quality and more vibrant colours can also represent an opportunity. Whilst your career to date may have involved more conventional programming positions, if you take the time to learn new skills then writing firmware for televisions and other appliances could be a new direction to go in. Writing software applications for notebook computers may have been good enough to command great salaries a few years ago but nowadays, with the extra competition from abroad, diversifying into other areas can really pay dividends. That is not to say that there are no openings for programmers who want to write applications that run on personal computers, just that the more skills you have the more you have to offer any future employer. You may even find that your career veers off in a totally unexpected direction. After investigating a digital camcorder from a programmer's point of view it may turn out that you discover you are naturally talented with a camera and end up making amateur films. It might sound bizarre but with the capabilities of these machines it is possible to get some really professional results from them if you know what you are doing. There is nothing wrong in concentrating on your core skills but you should always keep an open mind. Staying freshTaking time out from job hunting and turning on your DVD player to chill out and watch a film can keep you fresh and motivated. If you do not give yourself a break every now and then during the day then it is easy to become despondent and the task can become a real bore. Disc players that can upscale standard definition films to near native hi-def format make watching even old films a completely new experience. In order to benefit from this high resolution capability you will of course need to own an HD TV as well. As they have become more popular the prices have dropped so if you looked at buying one before and decided it was not worth the cost then perhaps now is a good time to look again. Once you have secured a well-paying position with a new company may be the best time to start looking at new home entertainment units and this could help motivate you at any interviews you attend. To practice your interview technique all you need is a decent multimedia laptop and an understanding friend with some time on their hands. These PCs often come with an integrated webcam and because they are built to watch films and listen to music on, amongst other things, are also good for reviewing your performance after recording a mock interview with the webcam. A lot of people get quite nervous at interviews so it is a good idea to practise quite often. Alternative viewpointsThere are some things in life that most people agree upon. When buying a new television LCD models are by far and away the most popular choice because of the superior picture quality they offer over CRT sets. In a work environment it is often worth looking at things from a different angle however. People who become known for their problem solving skills by using lateral thinking can make themselves into prized employees and command higher salaries than their colleagues. Sometimes things move in a logical progression as with disc players. Initially there were machines that could only play discs then came the DVD recorder. Nobody can deny the convenience that these machines offer when compared to VHS recorders but taking a contrarian view when developing new software can often open your mind to new possibilities that you might otherwise have missed. If you find that you have a knack for this way of thinking but it is not appreciated in your current position then it could either be time to look for a new one or to strike out on your own. With your own laptop and a large dose of self-confidence there is no reason why you cannot make a good living as a software consultant. Most machines are good enough to write applications with and as long as you are mobile and have the self-discipline to get up every morning and look for new clients it could turn out to be the best move you ever make. |
