UK Employment Law Coverage

Bosses need to take note of their obligations toward their subordinates by understanding which edicts have a direct on them. They should also uphold health and safety standards and provide adequate insurance. Basically, they have the responsibility to take into account the welfare or workers under common law. The main areas tackled in employment law are wagesand unfair dismissal.

Wages

It is the job of the employer to indicate the terms and conditions in a worker's contract. This legal document must contain how the individual is paid and how the salary is calculated. According to the 1998 Minimum Wage Act, the business owner is bound by law to pay an hourly rate to each worker and keep indivdual records of the wages. In addition, the contract must also indicate if the benefits to be expected, and legal sanctions to be issued if the employee does not follow the terms of the contract.

Unfair Dismissal

A worker appeal his or her case in the Employment Tribunal in case of unfair dismissal, especially when the work carried out was satisfactory. Discrimination on the grounds of religion, race, gender, and sexuality is deemed unlawful. Other grounds for this offence include:

  • asked to do something unreasonable
  • experienced abuse
  • selected for retirement or redundancy without proper grounds

At first, the dismissed party must try to reason first. If negotiations fail, that is when he or she can make an appeal to the tribunal. Furthermore, the personnel can demand compensation, which can be costly to the company.

The reason why this law was enacted is to ensure workers are treated fairly. This means that all personnel must receive just and equal treatment in the workplace. This way, they can be productive in the workplace and feel motivated to achieve the goals of the establishment.

Upholding these edicts is one way of maintaining a successful business. Of course, this cannot be done without the right individuals.
